The prediction of women at risk is difficult. Information and routine follow up of all women with obstetric anal sphincter rupture is mandatory. PMID: 8863705 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE] Effects of physiotherapy treatment for patients with obstetric anal sphincter rupture: a systematic review Elisabeth Arkel Department of Physical Therapy Norra Älvsborgs Länssjukhus, Trollhättan, Sweden; Correspondence elisabeth.arkel@vgregion.se 2016-03-21 Conclusions Obstetric anal sphincter rupture is an important risk factor for sexual complaints and for faecal incontinence increasing with age irrespective of menopausal state. A ruptured internal sphincter was repaired separately and the torn ends of the external sphincter were overlapped and sutured with 310 polydioxanone sulphate sutures (Ethicon, Edinburgh, UK). Main outcome measures Bowel function, clinical assessment, anal endosonography and manometry performed at a mean of 140 days after delivery. Lacerations of the anal sphincter or injury to sphincter innervation during childbirth are major causes of fecal incontinence, but the incidence and importance of occult sphincter damage during Frequency of anal sphincter rupture at delivery in Sweden and Finland ‐ result of difference in manual help to the baby's head.

The perineum is defined as the region between the pubic symphysis, the ischial tuberosities and the detectable sphincter ruptures has been as low as 2.4% (11).

During the past decade, the incidence of anal sphincter ruptures has been increasing in Sweden and is currently estimated to occur in 2.5% of vaginal deliveries. 1994-05-23 In the anal sphincter rupture group, an improvement was found over the first 3 months after delivery, but afterwards no further change occurred. The anal sphincter strength was significantly reduced compared to the control group, both soon after delivery and after 3 months. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that the risk of an anal sphincter rupture at delivery increases five to sevenfold when there has been a similar rupture at a previous delivery.
